Each year, the Golden Paddle Award recognizes individuals who have made a profound impact on the world of packrafting—those who embody dedication, community-building, and a deep appreciation for adventure. This year, we are proud to present this honor to Rodrigo Alfonzo for his incredible work to build a packraft community in Chiapas, Mexico.
Rodrigo first discovered packrafting in 2020 when he saw photos of Río La Venta—a breathtaking, remote river he had originally explored on foot in 2010. Inspired to take to the water, he acquired his first packraft in 2022 and soon realized that paddling alone wasn’t enough—he needed a community.
Since then, Rodrigo has worked tirelessly to bring packrafting education and opportunities to locals in Chiapas. In 2024, with the support of Four Corners Guides, he helped organize the first-ever ACA-certified packrafting course in Mexico, bringing 12 local participants into the sport. Looking ahead to 2025, he is spearheading additional courses and a Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course, further strengthening safety and education in the region.
Rodrigo’s impact goes beyond investing in training for himself and others. As Río La Venta grows in popularity, he has worked closely with the local reserve management to foster relationships between packrafters and conservation groups. His efforts have helped identify areas of concern, advocate for responsible recreation, and educate paddlers on safety and environmental stewardship.
“Many people see the incredible photos of Río La Venta and come unprepared,” Rodrigo says. “My goal is to ensure they have the knowledge and resources to safely experience these places while respecting the environment and local communities.”
Rodrigo’s work has sparked momentum for packrafting throughout Mexico. Thanks to donations from friends and Alpacka Raft, the local community now has 14 packrafts, and the network of certified instructors continues to grow. He has also connected with paddlers across Tijuana, Puebla, and Veracruz, proving that Mexico’s packrafting community is thriving.
Rodrigo is also an Aqua-Bound Ambassador, further expanding awareness of the sport while advocating for conservation and responsible adventure.
Join us in celebrating Rodrigo! His commitment to community, education, and responsible recreation reflects APA’s core values. We’re proud to recognize his work and look forward to seeing his continued impact on packrafting in Mexico.
