Challenging whitewater on the West slope of the Sierras and rivers running to the Northern California coast fall within our Pacific Region, along with exciting packrafting opportunities in Nevada and Hawaii. Our Pacific Region leadership team in the San Francisco Bay area welcomes newcomers and experienced packrafters alike.

Exploring the Diverse Waters of the Pacific Region

From the year-round whitewater thrills of California, the jungle boating in Hawaii, and the select boatable waters of Nevada, the Pacific Region offers a unique set of challenges and delights for packrafters. While there is an impressive amount of wilderness and public land in our region, opportunities to use packrafts as intended, to paddle rivers that are not accessible by road, generally require class IV+ skills.

California: The Whitewater Epicenter

The South Fork of the American River in California stands out as a hub for whitewater enthusiasts, offering reliable flows year-round due to dam releases. The state's packrafting season varies, with a winter season in the coastal range and a spring season in the Sierra foothills. However, the rugged and steep wilderness terrain, coupled with limited access, means that many rivers in the wilderness areas are challenging, often reaching Class IV and higher.

Hawaii: A Challenge for the Skilled

Packrafting in Hawaii is a high-stakes, expert-only pursuit with limited access and extreme risks. Areas like the “Boiling Pots” may appear inviting but are highly hazardous, with lava tubes and powerful sieves that have claimed many lives. Conditions are fleeting, often requiring “strike missions” to catch brief weather windows. Hawaii’s packrafting landscape remains incredibly demanding and unsuitable for anyone lacking Class V skills, intimate familiarity with local conditions, and established permissions from private landowners.

Nevada: Limited but Rewarding

Nevada's arid climate means fewer waterways, but there are still opportunities for packrafting on the few rivers that traverse its landscape. These hidden gems offer an exclusive experience for those seeking to explore the less-traveled paths.

Education and Community Events

For those seeking instruction in packrafting skills, the California Whitewater Collective in Coloma is a resource for training and education. The region hosts several events, including the annual California Packraft Soiree on the South Fork of the American River and plans for a Pacific Chapter meetup on the Trinity River.

Pacific Chapter Chair

Robin Levick

Robin, an Oakland resident, has been engrossed in packrafting since attending the first California Packrafting Soiree in 2019. Initially drawn to packrafting to complement wilderness backpacking trips in California, Robin quickly discovered the thrill of whitewater paddling. Considering that most of California's hike-in wilderness rivers are class IV+ in difficulty, he has been focusing on skill development, engaging in more roadside boating than initially anticipated! Robin is excited to share the joys of packrafting and to promote skillful, safe river navigation in the Pacific region.
